In a visit to PBS-TV鈥檚聽聽in Washington, D.C., Gloria James and family members of NBA superstar LeBron James highlighted the extraordinary impact of the LeBron James Family Foundation (LJFF) and its ongoing mission to uplift and empower communities. The foundation鈥檚 efforts, which began in Akron, Ohio, where LeBron was raised, have become a national model for athletes, entertainers, and politicians alike.

Gloria, LeBron鈥檚 mother, expressed immense pride in her son鈥檚 accomplishments both on and off the court. 鈥淚鈥檓 very honored to be LeBron鈥檚 mother. He has done so much for our community and for people across the world. He鈥檚 so unselfish,鈥 Gloria said, emphasizing that LeBron鈥檚 greatness extends beyond his athletic achievements. 鈥淗e鈥檚 not only the GOAT on the court, but off the court. He鈥檚 a humanitarian, a great father and husband, and a great advocate for his community, people of color, and the underdog.鈥

The LJFF, through its flagship聽聽program, serves over 1,400 students in the Akron area, offering comprehensive support that extends far beyond academics. The foundation鈥檚 work, as Gloria described, is about more than just raising graduation rates; it鈥檚 about redefining the concepts of family and community.

鈥淲hat we learned was that you can鈥檛 just help one person in the family and expect it to be of great significance,鈥 Gloria explained. 鈥淓ven when it comes to housing or food, we address those issues as well. We know that a lot of our families can鈥檛 provide meals for themselves for a full family throughout the entire month, so we have pantries.鈥

The holistic approach to community support has become the cornerstone of the LJFF鈥檚 mission. 鈥淯nfortunately, some kids don鈥檛 have that in their lives,鈥 Gloria noted, referring to the love, compassion, and support she said true family offers. 鈥淭hey deserve that, and that way it鈥檒l also help them as they grow into adulthood. Family, we take that very seriously.鈥

Curtis James, LeBron鈥檚 uncle and an assistant at the foundation, echoed Gloria鈥檚 sentiments, highlighting the foundation鈥檚 recent projects, including a documentary. 鈥淲e just launched a documentary, and my job is to inspire people through my podcast. We want people to do the right thing. It鈥檚 not just through our music. Family keeps me in the community, and Akron will always need inspiration, so I try to be a model for people to do better and be better,鈥 Curtis shared.

The LJFF鈥檚 influence has extended to the University of Akron, where the聽聽operates with selective admission criteria to nurture future educators who will continue the foundation鈥檚 legacy of community upliftment.

鈥淲hat I鈥檝e learned through our foundation is that helping your community is probably one of the most important jobs you can have,鈥 said Gloria James, who works as a third-grade teacher鈥檚 adie at the I PROMISE school. 鈥淓specially if you鈥檙e on a platform that allows you to help, not just talk about it, but be about it. Put your money up. Our city has been so responsive positively that it makes us want to do even more.鈥

The family鈥檚 commitment to Akron and its residents is unwavering. As Gloria noted, they are not just making a difference but setting a precedent for others to follow. 鈥淲e also have blueprints for other athletes, actors, mayors of other cities, and we鈥檙e willing to share the blueprint so others in other cities can build up their communities. We鈥檝e been able to change lives.鈥

Reflecting on LeBron鈥檚 journey to superstardom, Gloria expressed pride not just in his athletic success, but in his dedication to his community. 鈥淚鈥檝e always been very proud of him,鈥 she asserted. 鈥淗e鈥檚 such a giving and caring and compassionate person. What鈥檚 most important to LeBron is the work that he does off the court. That鈥檚 the changes that he makes in the lives of the people in our community.鈥

Gloria also shared her emotions during one of LeBron鈥檚 most iconic moments鈥攃arrying the Olympic flag. 鈥淓very time LeBron exceeds expectations, which is often, I feel he鈥檚 given more than he鈥檚 received. But seeing him carrying the Olympic flag made me feel even more special; that was almost surreal,鈥 she noted. 鈥淭hink back years ago when Blacks and people of color had such a hard time being chosen for something so honorable, so to see that made it even more special. To see them with medals around their necks, it just confirms that he鈥檚 done all the right things and he鈥檚 deserving.鈥

The excitement continues for the James family, as LeBron鈥檚 son, Bronny, is expected to join him on the Los Angeles Lakers for the upcoming season. 鈥淭hat will be very special. I know LeBron is extremely excited about playing with his son,鈥 Gloria said, beaming with pride at the prospect of the father-son duo making history together on the court.

Sean Jones, a Cleveland native, and Curtis鈥檚 music partner accompanied the family to D.C. and reflected on his journey. 鈥淲hen I released my first record, I was called the LeBron James of rap, but who would ever have thought I鈥檇 be sitting here today with LeBron鈥檚 mother, Gloria, and Curtis,鈥 he remarked, acknowledging the deep connections that the James family has fostered within their community.

Despite the success, Gloria said the family maintains a close circle. 鈥淲e鈥檝e been really blessed,鈥 Gloria said. 鈥淥ur family has been respectful. No one has really felt like they want a place in the center circle that we have, so things have worked out really well.鈥

In reflecting on the foundation鈥檚 broad impact, Gloria James summed up their mission with heartfelt pride: 鈥淲hat鈥檚 most important to LeBron is the work that he does off the court. That鈥檚 the changes that he makes in the lives of the people in our community. Coming from this same community at a time when we also needed this same help鈥攈e鈥檚 only done what he promised to do.鈥
